Living in Victoria may be somewhat expensive compared to the rest of Canada, but nowhere near as expensive as in the larger cities like Vancouver or Toronto.
What about rental rates for a suite or an apartment? Originally published by BNN, there’s a recent article that discusses rental rates for apartments across Canada and some were very surprising. Most expensive rate for a studio apartment is Ajax Ontario for $1,253. Least expensive: Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, between Quebec City and Montreal; an average of $384!
One of most interesting facts is that in many cases the most expensive places were not located in the most expensive big cities; they were located just outside the large metropolis centers. For the complete posting from BNN CLICK HERE.
RentSeeker.ca goes into all the data and is very handy site to know about if you are looking for apartment rentals as a tenant, or, a great place to post a listing if you are a landlord needing advertising exposure for your freshly painted suite in Victoria!
There’s another interesting website called Numbeo where you can look up all sorts of costs of living in many areas of the world. Try it out against where you live and see how you are faring.
And, of course, for those of us in Victoria, there’s UsedVictoria.com
As always, thanks for reading and if I can help in any way:

It’s that time of the year when kids sense that school is looming over the horizon, when parents start paying attention to the sales for everything we might need in equipping their kids for school…
It’s also the time of year when home buyers, after having a fun-filled vacation, buckle down and try to find a home with secondary accommodation for a family member or maybe a mortgage helper – or even something to help offset the cost of private education?
Here’s a home at 1858 Penshurst Road that’s not only equipped with secondary accommodation for your needs, but it’s in Gordon Head; one of Victoria’s prime neighborhoods for schools, a close proximity to UVIC, great shopping nearby, parks and recreation centers, beaches, you name it.
Looks a little on the small side? Don’t let the exterior photo fool you – this home is larger than it appears to be. With close to 3,000 square feet of finished living space, I’d say it’s on the large side.
And check out the main kitchen below.
Wide open, nicely decorated & painted main suite area…
The suite kitchen – one of the nicest I’ve seen.

There’s nothing like owning your own home but these days, it can be really hard to accomplish if you are located in markets like Toronto, Vancouver and even Victoria, BC.
What to do to grab that dream home? Search for other streams of income that makes it affordable.
How about a ‘mortgage helper’? Or, how about renting a portion of your home to a student? That’s a great strategy especially if you live near a university. Or, perhaps you have extended family that could appreciate sharing a place and then willing to share in the associated costs?
Secondary accommodation, inlaw suite, mortgage helper; call it what you will and if you are the type that makes a good landlord, this just might be the solution to your home ownership dreams.

As with any home purchase, it’s very important to do your own due diligence: find out all about the home, research municipal restrictions and read up on bylaws for rentals, etc. The absolute best way to accomplish this is to work with a team of professionals that would include a Realtor®, home inspector, lawyer or notary and a financial professional.
Can affordable home ownership be a reality for you? Absolutely!

Buried Oil Tanks in Victoria CRD
Do you have oil heat in your home? Did you at one time have an oil furnace?
If the answers are ‘yes’, ‘maybe’ or ‘I don’t know’ you should be aware that there might be a buried oil tank on your property and it might be contaminating the surrounding soil if it wasn’t decommissioned properly.
Bottom-line, the home owner and all previous owners of the subject property might be on the hook for any environmental damages and related costs. And the costs can be significant.
What to do? First, find out any history of your home’s heating system from your municipality or the local fire hall. If there’s no history, contact a scanning company that uses metal detection and/or ground penetrating radar to search the property. If a buried tank is found, the best strategy is to remove it and make sure the surrounding soil is not contaminated. By doing so, you might avoid large remediation costs in the future.
For more detailed information on this subject, go to:
If you are planning to sell your property, all of the above still applies; you might still be on the hook even after the new owners move in.
